Maria Combrink’s Inspiring Journey as an Amputee

Meet Maria Combrink

Maria Combrink is a data geologist in the mining industry and a remarkable individual with an inspiring story of resilience. Thirteen years ago, Maria experienced a life-changing accident, leading her to become a below-the-knee amputee. Her journey of recovery and adaptation is a testament to determination, innovation, and the pursuit of a full and active life.

A Life-Changing Decision

Maria’s journey as an amputee began with a devastating fall from a height of 5.5 metres (18 feet), resulting in severe damage to her foot. Over the next two years, she underwent 12 surgeries to save her foot. Despite these efforts, Maria faced constant pain and struggled with limited mobility. Realising her quality of life was suffering, she made the tough decision to opt for an elective amputation below the knee.

Choosing amputation was not an easy choice, but for Maria, it was about regaining control over her life. After consulting with multiple surgeons, she finally found one who understood her needs and agreed to perform the procedure. This decision, though difficult, marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.

Finding the Perfect Prosthetic

Post-amputation, Maria’s quest to find the right prosthetic solution was challenging. Her first prosthetist provided devices that didn’t suit her active lifestyle. Determined to find something better, Maria conducted extensive research and eventually discovered Marco du Plooy , a prosthetist in Pretoria, South Africa. Marco’s expertise and commitment to understanding Maria’s unique needs made all the difference. He designed a prosthetic leg that is not only comfortable but also perfectly suited to Maria’s adventurous spirit.

Living Life to the Fullest

With her new prosthetic, Maria has embraced life with renewed vigour. The comfort and functionality of her prosthetic leg have been transformative, allowing her to enjoy activities like tree climbing (without hesitation). The innovative design by Marco means Maria no longer has to worry about discomfort or limitations. She often forgets she is wearing a prosthetic because it feels so natural.
